Laboratory analyses and services

We offer a complete portfolio of analytical services for determining the suitability of a selected heat transfer fluid for your application. We perform a determination of the actual level of exhaustion and decrease in effectivity of additives in your media. We evaluate the changes in viscosity and freezing point, the detection of possible contamination, etc. Most of downlisted analyses we carry out in our R&D laboratory, but we might arrange other services performed by our contractors.

Evaluation of antifreeze and anti-corrosion properties
for new / operated fluids, including water

Thanks to our own development of antifreezes and consistent control of production quality, the CLASSIC Oil s.r.o. laboratory is equipped with the most important instruments for their assessment. Thus we are able to provide the condition evaluation of heat transfer fluids from circuits, the potential of their further use, suggestion for its partial or complete replacement, or an accurate additivation for improving heat resistance or anti-corrosion protection. The laboratory service is mostly free-of-charge for our customers. For other partners for a reasonable fee. This particularly involves following parameters and their determination:

  • Initial crystallisation temperature and freezing point – using refractometer or cryostat up to -80 °C (according to ASTM D1177)
  • Density, dynamic and kinematic viscosity at temperature range from -40°C to 100 °C (according to ASTM D1122)
  • pH and free alkalinity (according to ASTM D1287 or ASTM D1121 respectively)
  • Boiling point (acc. to ASTM D1120) and flash-point (closed cup test)
  • Refractive index (Brix) at temperature range from 5 to 100 °C
  • Electrical conductivity
  • Water content in alcohols (acc. to the ASTM D1123)
  • Anti-corrosion test according to the ASTM D1384 standard for 14 days at 88 °C (6 samples positions)
  • Standard test method for corrosion of cast aluminium alloys in engine coolants according to the ASTM D4340 for 7 days at 135 °C – NEW, THE ONLY ONE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC
  • Measurement of thermal capacity and thermal conductivity of fluids at C-Therm TCi instrument at tmperature range from -20 to 150 °C - NEW
  • Assessment of dry matter, evaporation residue or active substances in materials
  • Testing the purity of alcohols, and evaluation of type of alcohol or glycol by gas chromatography
  • Determination of the presence of methanol in alcoholic beverages or windshield washer fluids by GC
  • Determination of water hardness, chloride and iron content (not by indicator papers!)
  • Measurement of foaming tendencies of engine coolant in glasware according to the ASTM D1881
  • Evaluation of effect of antifreezes on organic finishes according to the ASTM D 1882

Evaluation of the quality for oils, lubricants and emulsions

The CLASSIC Oil s.r.o. laboratory is able of assess the basic parameters of oils and lubricants, such as viscosity and density - both parameters in a wide temperature range, water content and flash point temperature. For emulsions we can measure the pH value, microbiological tests, conductivity and hardness of used water. Further parameters and tests can be provided in external laboratories.

  • Viscosity (-40 °C to 110 °C), viscosity index, classification of oils according to their SAE viscosity
  • Water content by Karl Fisher titration
  • Flash-point temperature (closed cup test)

  • Anton Paar density meter and viscometer (one of several) connected to an external thermoseted source
  • pH meter and burette for titrating free alkalinity or acidity according to the ASTM D1221
  • Apparatus for measuring the foaming tendencies of engine coolant in glasware according to the ASTM D1881 or according to VW TL774
  • Fully automatic self-extinguishing instrument for determining the flash-point (closed cap test)
  • Apparatus for determining the boiling point at atmospheric pressure according to the ASTM D1120
  • Automatic professional Anton Paar refractometer with internal cooling and heating
